Publication type: News item

In a nutshell: From the 1st January there will be a new NHS electronic journals A-Z service. The existing My Journals service (provided by TDNet) will be replace by the National Library for Health A-Z Service.

Journal content e-mail alerts provided by My Journals will also cease on the 31st December 2008. The National Library for Health has purchase Zetoc until July 2009 to provide journal content e-mail alerts.

What does this mean for me?
· If you currently have any journal content e-mail alerts set up with My Journals, these will cease on the 31st December 2008
· These alerts will not be carried over to the new Zetoc service; you will need to do this yourself at http://zetoc.mimas.ac.uk/index.html
· You will notice the ‘My Favourite Journals’ panel disappear on the National Library for Health

How do I set up journal content e-mail alerts from Zetoc?
You will need your NHS Athens username and password Help and support for setting up alerts is available at http://zetoc.mimas.ac.uk/support.html; a key resource if you are new to Zetoc.
A quick guide to setting up alerts from Zetoc is available at http://zetoc.mimas.ac.uk/quickguidealert.pdf.

Integrated Library Service supports Macmillan Cancer Support

Source: Integrated Library Service
Publication type: News item

In a nutshell: The Integrated Library Service (ILS) helped to create a huge ‘stir’ on Friday 26th September when they raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning campaign.

The ILS also launched a brand new collection of books called the ‘Read and Relax Collection,’ which is aimed to encourage recreational reading to all of its library users. Library staff got into the fundraising spirit by dressing in the widely recognised green and white Macmillan colours and set up a stall in the dining area of the Education Centre, Arrowe Park Hospital. The team sold cakes, biscuits, cups of tea and coffee to help raise money for this worthy cause. There was even a raffle and a chance for staff to have a go at winning a shopping spree.

A calendar with selected images from the NHS over the years was designed and produced by library staff. All proceeds from the calendars are to go to Macmillan Cancer Supportand are still available to purchase from the McArdle Library. Everyone that attended was encouraged to take a peek at the new ‘Read and Relax Collection,’ which complimented the coffee morning’s motto of ‘Coffee, Cake and a Cracking Good Read!’ Overall, the ILS raised over £200 for Macmillan Cancer Support, which will help to improve the lives of people living with cancer. The team would like to thank everyone who gave donations on the day.

Osteoarthritis Annual Evidence Update

http://www.library.nhs.uk/musculoskeletal

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition limiting function and mobility. It usually develops in people who are over 50 years but younger people can also be affected. OA mostly occurs in the knees, hips and hands but any joint can be affected.

Following last year’s extensive Annual Evidence Update, the Musculoskeletal Specialist Library in conjunction with the Trauma & Orthopaedics Specialist Library have searched and sifted through the guidance and evidence published during the last year and have produced an Annual Evidence Update which will be of particular interest to all health professionals. Included in this year’s update are guidelines issued by NICE, RCP and Clinical Knowledge Summaries and systematic reviews covering various treatment options including pharmacological therapies, physical therapies, complementary and alternative therapies and surgery.

The Annual Evidence Update is being released to coincide with World Arthritis Day on 12 October 2008.

Breast Cancer Annual Evidence Update

http://www.library.nhs.uk/cancer

The Cancer Specialist Library will launch its 2008 Breast Cancer Annual Evidence Update on 13 October. The size of the literature in breast cancer is large so the scope of the Annual Evidence Update has been divided into sections, which will consider:

* Causes, risks and prevention
* Screening
* Assessment and diagnosis
* Service delivery and standards
* Treatment and disease management - Biological therapy
* Treatment and disease management - Chemotherapy
* Treatment and disease management - Hormone therapy
* Treatment and disease management - Radiotherapy
* Treatment and disease management - Surgery
* Other therapies
* Psychosocial, quality of life and decision making
* Follow-up and miscellaneous topics

The resources included in the update are mostly systematic reviews and some guidance published in the preceding year (2007-2008). Where possible we will provide links to the full text and where these are not available to the abstract. The Cancer Specialist Library conducts on-going literature searches and the resources presented in the Annual Evidence Update are the most recently published material that has been indexed in the international databases we search.

ILS wins award for Innovation and Service Improvement

We are pleased to announce that the Integrated Library Service (ILS) is the proud winner of the award for Innovation and Service Improvement within Corporate Services at last week’s Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) Foundation Awards.

Winning this award is the culmination of months of hard work and dedication from the ILS team. The award was presented at the WUTH Foundation Awards on Thursday 18th September 2008 at Hulme Hall, Port Sunlight. Television presenter Fred Talbot presented the award to Eileen Hume, Head of Trust Integrated Library Service, commenting:

‘The ILS is on the cutting edge of new developments in health libraries and in the past 12 months has led the way in delivering exciting and innovative library services. Notably, the Team has developed the ILS website to replicate virtually the services available in the physical library and implemented new ideas to engage library users among Trust staff and external partners. The staff have shown originality and commitment to their field to enable others to excel in theirs.’

The traditional business of library services has evolved into a ground-breaking and innovative service, with developments such as a successful shared library service with the University of Chester, significant developments in the ILS web pages to engage library users and the launch of the Read and Relax Collection, a recreational book collection to encourage non-traditional library users to utilise our services.

The innovation and pioneering work being undertaken by the ILS was recognised earlier this year when we were awarded a Level 3 under the Health Libraries and Information Confederation (HELICON) accreditation scheme. This is the highest level of accreditation possible, and the ILS was highly praised by the assessors for its excellence and innovation. In April 2008 the ILS has also received national funding from the National Institute for Innovation and Improvement (NIII) for funds to support the development of a Business Intelligence Service role for NHS Libraries.

NLH Document of the Week: Interventions for enhancing research use by nurses

The purpose of this study was to understand the factors that influence the implementation of research by nurses in the acute sector. Nurses were chosen as study participants because they tend to be the largest group of professionals employed in healthcare organisations. The authors found that nurses with higher workloads had the lowest research utilisation scores and where there was more organisational support, the levels of research utilisation were increased.

NLH Document of the Week: Design of guideline implementation strategies did influence adherence to guidelines

Paper looking at whether ease of use, incentives or education would increase guideline implementation.

The authors of this paper looked at the best methods for ensuring that physicians apply guidelines. They found that "guideline implementation strategies that were designed to reduce physician time pressure and task complexity were the only ones that improved performance." Incentives had little effect, and education was not sufficient for increasing implementation of guidelines.

The proposed NHS Constitution marking 60 years of the NHS, is about safeguarding its core principles and values for the next generation, whilst setting a clear direction for the future. It reaffirms rights to NHS services, free of charge and with equal access for all, and it enshrines patient rights to choice and to NICE-approved drugs recommended by clinicians. A selection of documents related to the consultation are presented.

3) A high quality workforce: NHS Next Stage review (30th June 2008)
More detail on the workforce recommendations in the NHS Next Stage review.

Annual Evidence Update on the Health Needs of People with Learning Disabilities: 30th June - 4th July 2008

An update of the evidence on this topic from the NLH Learning Disabilities Specialist Library.

People with learning disabilities have a higher level of health needs than the general population, many of which are unmet. The Learning Disability Health Needs Annual Evidence Update provides bibliographies of published research for some key health issues:
* Cancer
* Coronary heart disease
* Epilepsy
* Challenging behaviour
* Respiratory illness

We know that many people with learning disabilities do not to seek out support from the healthcare system unaided, and that healthcare issues can remain undiagnosed or untreated. Healthcare professionals in primary care have infrequent contact with people with learning disabilities, and few have had specific training, although the requirement to offer Health Action Planning to people with learning disabilities to help identify healthcare needs should improve outcomes.

The Integrated Library Service welcomes new Library Assistants

Faye Keane and Beccy Fulcher join the Integrated Library Service Team in March 2008.

Hi I’m Beccy Fulcher and I’m the new library assistant based mainly at Clatterbridge Hospital. I studied Psychology and Criminology at Keele University and graduated in 2005.

Since then I have worked as a support worker at Liverpool John Moore’s University and as a volunteer for victim support, specialising in domestic violence. I think I will enjoy working in a health library as I studied health psychology at university and I am looking forward to getting to know the people here as I have only lived on the Wirral for 2 years.

Hi! I’m Faye Keane and I’ve just started working as a library assistant at the McArdle Library, Arrowe Park. I have just completed a journalism degree at The University of Sheffield. I really enjoyed my degree as it gave me a brilliant opportunity to develop my communication skills.
I have also worked temporarily as a library assistant for Wirral Libraries and have enjoyed dealing with the public and developing my ability to provide confident customer service. I am excited about working in a health library and am looking forward to meeting new people and learning about my new workplace.

IMPORTANT NEWS: Changes to Dialog Databases on 1st April 2008 means you may lose saved searches

If you are the holder Athens username and password you are probably already familiar with the range of electronic information resources your password entitles you to. The purpose of this news item is to let you know about some changes to how you'll be able to access and use those resources in the future.

What is happening to the Dialog Databases?
Last year the nationally provided NHS electronic resources were re-procured. Dialog, which since 2004 has held the national contract to supply the NHS with electronic databases, lost their contract. As a result from 31st May 2008 you will no longer be able to search databases via Dialog.

How will I search healthcare databases after May 2008?
A new NHS-branded search tool is being developed by the National Library for Health (NLH). The new search engine, called Search 2.0, is currently being tested by NHS librarians. It will be the main discovery tool to locate citations from the following primary databases:
  • PubMed/Medline
  • Cinahl
  • Embase
  • Alternative and Complementary Medicine Database
  • British Nursing Index
  • PsycINFO
  • Health Management Information Consortium (HMIC)
The planned national launch date is April 1st 2008, so that there will be a two month overlap between the Dialog databases and Search 2.0 during this transitional period.

For more information link to the NLH website and click on the red Search 2.0 icon. NLH Search 2.0 will be accessible from the NLH website and also by clicking the NLH link in the Resources list within MyAthens (http://auth.athensams.net/my/).

Important note
The current Dialog Datastar search interface will continue to be available, in parallel with Search 2.0, until May 31st. Unfortunately, any literature searches you have saved on Dialog Datastar WILL NOT be carried over to Search 2.0 once Dialog is switched off. Please save your searches to your own computer before then.

If you need help with any aspect of this please visit www.library.nhs.uk/nlhdocs/viewing_saved_searches.doc or contact the staff at either site library or contact us via the ‘Ask a Librarian’ Service.

Changes to NHS electronic full-text journals
As part of the national re-procurement of NHS electronic resources Proquest also lost its contract to be the main supplier of NHS electronic journals. From the 31st March 2008 Proquest titles will no longer be available to NHS users.

Which electronic journals will replace the Proquest titles?
The Proquest titles are being replaced by fewer but what the National Library for Health hope will be higher quality titles as detailed below:

Printing and Inter-Library Loan Charges for Junior Doctors

As a result of a decision made at the January meeting of the Medical Education Task Force it has been agreed that from Tuesday 1st April 2008 all printing and Inter-Library Loan (ILL) requests made by junior doctors will be charged at the advertised rate.

The list of charges for these services are displayed in both the McArdle Library, Education Centre, Arrowe Park and the John A. Aitken Library, Wirral Postgraduate Medical Centre, Clatterbridge, as well as the library website.

If you wish to re-charge your division for any charges that you incur, you must fill in a Divisional Charge Form. Forms are available from the library desk or via our website. Please remember that this re-charge facility must be authorised by a member of staff who has been identified as being on the Trust’s Scheme of Delegation for that particular budget. Re-charges are sent electronically to finance with notification to the divisions every three months.
