Library opening hours at Christmas and New Year
In a nutshell:
The McArdle Library at Arrowe Park Hospital is not staffed on the following days:

24-hour swipe card access is available at the McArdle Library as usual on these dates.
The John A. Aitken Library at Clatterbridge Hospital will be closed from Friday 25th December and will resume normal opening hours (9.00am-5.00pm) on Tuesday 4th January.

In a nutshell: The Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre) is part of the Social Science Research Unit at the Institute of Education, University of London. Participative research and policy is a short course on maximising the use of research for policy and practice. On successful completion of this course, you will be able to conduct and use research collaboratively, in order to promote change for better health, education or well-being. The module is run as an online course.

'Aren't we sweet': raising money for Children in Need
In a nutshell: The Integrated Library Service (ILS) team helped to raise money for Children in Need by donating library fines and holding a cake sale on 20th November 2009. Staff baked a selection of scrumptious cakes including chocolatey treats, ‘Pudsey’ cakes and fresh-baked banana muffins, which were sold in the McArdle Library at Arrowe Park. The ILS team raised £30.00, all thanks to the generosity of Wirral University Teaching Hospital staff and visiting students.

BMJ and BMJ Journals now available for all NHS users

In a nutshell: The NHS in England has centrally purchased online access to BMJ Journals for all NHS users located in England. This includes access to BMJ and 22 specialist journals such as Gut, Heart and Thorax. In addition you benefit from unrestricted online access to all the BMJ Journals back to volume 1 issue 1 via your NHS Athens username and password. New England Journal of Medicine: *New content!*
In a nutshell: The library's subscription to the New England Journal of Medicine now includes full text articles from 1993 to present, and a new feature, Videos in Clinical Medicine.
Videos in Clinical Medicine are educational videos to teach procedures requiring skilled techniques and specialized physical examination. This first series of teaching videos is intended to help students, trainees, and younger physicians to learn procedural techniques from experienced colleagues.
The videos are available both in a downloadable file and in a version compatible with handheld digital devices. Each video is from five to eight minutes long and is accompanied online by a printable summary to supplement the video.

NW Regional Innovation Fund set to go live

In a nutshell: Applications are due to open within the next two weeks for the NHS North West's new Regional Innovation Fund. InnovateNoW, as the programme will be known, aims to support NHS organisations and innovative partnerships to drive the quality and productivity of the regional healthcare services and meet healthcare demands. It offers varying levels of funding available, ranging between £5,000- and £250,000 through a number of award schemes. Applications must be from an NHS organisation, but can include partnerships with Trusts, PCTs, HEIs, and third sector and private sector partners.

'Open science' case studies wanted

In a nutshell: The Research Information Network (RIN) and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) are looking to fund a series of case studies which will examine what motivates researchers to work (or want to work) in an open manner with regard to their data, results and protocols, and whether advantages are delivered by working in this way. The case studies will also examine the disincentives and barriers to such ‘open science’ methods. The RIN and NESTA are making available up to £15,000 for this project, which is intended to run from October 2009 until January 2010.

PRINCE2 Practitioner Courses provided by INFOcus for only £250

In a nutshell: As part of the INFOcus Learning Portal initiative provided by the NHS North West funded INFOcus Service, PRINCE2 Practitioner courses will be running from September 2009.
These conversion courses are designed for people who have already passed PRINCE2 Foundation and wish to convert to the PRINCE2 Practitioner qualification. It is a 3 day classroom based course for up to 16 students and will be facilitated by Remarc and held at their offices in Central Manchester.
INFOcus will be subsidising places on these courses and can offer the course for the superb price of £250 per person. This price not only includes your place on the 3 day course but also your fee for the Practitioner exam and also a copy of the PRINCE2 Manual (RRP £80) .
The course dates currently scheduled are:
28th- 30th September 2009
12th-14th October 2009
2nd- 4th November 2009

NIHR calls for research on influenza pandemic

In a nutshell: A call for research on the emerging influenza pandemic is being launched by the NIHR to provide evidence to influence ongoing policy and practice. The remit for this call is not restricted to particular study designs, provided they produce evidence that will be useful to patients and the NHS during the current pandemic. The timetable is very short, to produce results by the end of the year. Expressions of interest must be submitted by 26th June 2009.

Masters of Research (MRes) in Health Sciences: Fully funded studentships 2009-2010

In a nutshell: The University has been successful in securing 10 fully funded studentships per year over the next three years for Registered Nurses Midwives and Allied Health Professionals to be seconded from employment to undertake the MRes programme. These studentships, jointly funded and supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), as part of the Clinical Academic Training Pathways (CATP).
Applications for the first round of 10 funded studentships are now invited from practitioners wishing to start the programme in September 2009.

Map of Medicine use cuts poor referrals

In a nutshell: Use of Map of Medicine in primary care has led to a significant reduction in inadequate referrals from GPs, according to a new study. Doctors from the Institute of Nephrology in Cardiff looked at the impact of a patient care pathway for chronic kidney disease on Map of Medicine. They found use of the knowledge management tool cut inadequate referrals by almost 50% and also led to a slight reduction in overall referrals.

In a nutshell: Provided by NICE, NHS Evidence is a new service which will develop, enhance and expand the services that were previously provided by the National Library for Health (NLH).
The Specialist Collections (previously known as Specialist Libraries) have been developed to identify and meet the information needs of particular communities of practice. They are web-based collections containing clinical and non-clinical information on the major health priority areas.
The majority of NHS Evidence Specialist Collections focus on particular health problems, such as Oral Health, Respiratory and Cardiovascular. A few NHS Evidence Specialist Collections focus on specific patient groups, such as Women's Health and Learning Disabilities. The focus of other NHS Evidence Specialist Collections is on aspects of health services, such as Commissioning, Public Health and Health Management. PRE-REQUISITES
Some basic computer skills including basic Microsoft Excel skills.
PREPARATION
Those attending the clinic must come prepared to the session with a statistical problem (or scenario). Where possible an outline of the problem should be submitted in advance of attendance at the clinic (provision for submitting and outline of your question has been made through the online booking facility). This would be useful in allowing those facilitating the clinic to research problems in advance, but not essential.
OUTCOMES
On attendance at the clinic it is anticipated that a series of necessary actions will be identified and supported to achieve the desired outcome for the attendee with the statistical problem. When it is not possible to solve statistics problems directly within the clinic, an action plan will be drawn up jointly between the facilitator and the attendee to establish a direction of travel towards a solution.

In a nutshell: The National Library for Health (NLH) has transferred to NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) to become NHS Evidence.
The National Library for Health resources will now be known as NHS Evidence Information Resources. Currently you will notice a change in colour scheme and logos; additional functionality and content will be added in future versions of NHS Evidence.
NHS Evidence will incorporate some of the key components from the National Library for Health, enhancing and providing the latest functionality. In addition NHS Evidence will be developing an accreditation process for sources of information to provide confidence for users of health and social care information.

In a nutshell: Research opportunity for a Senior Project Officer / KTP Associate. NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan are working collaboratively with UCLAN to evaluate 'Lose Weight Feel Great', the recently launched Community Weight Management Pathway in the Borough (www.lwfg.co.uk). The successful applicant will work with key partners to evaluate the effectiveness of this pathway in increasing the health and well-being of the local population. The applicant will take a lead role in the research and evaluation of this innovative and unique approach to reverse the rising prevalence of obesity. This role is funded for 2 years and presents a rare opportunity to gain responsibility for a high profile project in the NHS.

CRDs Guidance for undertaking reviews in health care

In a nutshell: CRD’s original guidance for undertaking systematic reviews was first published in 1996 and revised in 2001. The guidance is widely recommended and used both nationally and internationally. The latest version 'Systematic Reviews: CRD’s guidance for undertaking reviews in health care', provides practical guidance for undertaking evidence synthesis based on a thorough understanding of systematic review methodology. It presents the core principles of systematic reviewing, and in complementary chapters, highlights issues that are specific to reviews of clinical tests, public health interventions, adverse effects, and economic evaluations. The final chapter discusses the incorporation of qualitative research in or alongside effectiveness reviews.

In a nutshell: The UK Database of Uncertainties about the Effects of Treatment (UK DUETs) is now available in the National Library for Health (NLH), and will be incorporated in NHS Evidence later this year. DUETs has been established in the UK to publish uncertainties about the effects of treatments that cannot currently be answered by referring to reliable, up-to-date systematic reviews of existing research evidence.

University of Chester 'refresher' Library Training

In a nutshell: Refresher sessions on using the various online resources available to University of Chester students will be delivered by University of Chester library staff on the following dates:
Wednesday 4th February 2009, 10.00am-11.30am
Thursday 26th February 2009, 1.00pm-2.30pm
Monday 9th March 2009, 1.00pm-2.30pm
Friday 27th March, 10.00am-11.30am
All sessions will be delivered in the IT room in the Faculty of Health and Social Care at Arrowe Park Hospital. These sessions will cover logging into IBIS (the University of Chester virtual learning environment); finding module spaces; using the library catalogue; searching journal databases.
Students are welcome to attend either the whole session, or to drop in with specific queries, but please book in advance via Kelly or Karen Spencer in the McArdle Library. The session can be either a refresher for those students who have already had this training or an introduction for those who have not previously had any form of library induction.
