WUTH has a trial of Dynamed available until the 30th November 2010. Dynamed is a medical information database designed for use at the point of care. It provides high-end, evidence based information from respected publications, associations, and contributing clinicians. DynaMed is updated daily, giving physicians, clinicians and medical students easy access to nearly 3,000 evidence-based clinical summaries.

Team celebrates international recognition
Representatives from the library service and medical education team at Wirral University Teaching Hospital have received international recognition for a collaborative project to support the continuing professional development of SAS (Staff Grade and Associated Specialist) doctors within the Trust.
Victoria Kirk (Clinical Librarian) and Dr Girendra Sadera (Consultant in Critical Care & Anaesthesia and SAS Tutor) were shortlisted into the top 10 for the Medical Teacher Poster Prize at the international medical education conference, AMEE 2010 (Association for Medical Education in Europe). Out of the 1700 abstracts that were submitted, only 600 posters were selected for presentation at the conference. Following an oral presentation and questioning, a panel of judges selected the 10 best posters which were awarded with special recognition for their ‘visual and academic impact’.
Victoria and Dr Sadera, alongside colleagues from the library service and medical education team, have worked closely to develop tailored library services for SAS doctors in order to meet their specific information needs. This included organising a Library Open Day for SAS doctors to raise awareness of literature searching services and ‘evidence alerts’, and launching a dedicated web portal to signpost SAS doctors to evidence based resources. The team have worked hard to raise awareness of how these services can support the daily practice of doctors within the Trust. It is hoped that the team can build on this achievement and continue to work together to achieve further successes.

Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training dates in the North West

In a nutshell: GCP training ensures that reserachers are equipped with the latest knowledge of Good Clinical Practice and Research Governance. This training is mandatory for WUTH researchers (need to attend every 18 months).

Library service improvements
The Integrated Library Service (ILS) is happy to feed back some of the service improvements that we have implemented as a result of your comments.
You said you needed to access Maps Manager and Employee Online in the library.
We installed Maps Manager and placed shortcut links to Employee Online on all of the computers and laptops in the McArdle Library.
You said you needed somewhere to facilitate training sessions.
We introduced a booking system to allow you to book the McArdle Library IT Suite for your training sessions and projectors, laptops, screens, flip charts and technical support were made available.
You said you wanted more primary care resources available at the Arrowe Park site.
We re-located the Primary Care Core collection to the McArdle Library.
You said the PCs at the John A. Aitken Library were slow.
We replaced the PCs with newer machines.
You said the McArdle Library was too dark.
We installed extra lighting to ensure a comfortable working environment.
You said you couldn’t access files on your personal USB devices.
We arranged for one PC to be configured so that you could use any USB device (personal or encrypted).
You said you wanted to access UpToDate.
We purchased a standalone licence of UpToDate to be accessed in the McArdle Library.

Online resource to identify treatment uncertainties

In a nutshell: Clinicians and patients are now able to collaborate in researching treatment uncertainties using a new online resource. The resource, The James Lind Alliance Guidebook, has been developed to find and prioritise unanswered questions about the effects of treatments. The guidebook is supported by the National Institute for Health Research, the Medical Research Council and NICE. The handbook can be downloaded as a PDF file (56 pages).

Finding the Evidence 1
A starting point for anyone who wants to develop basic searching skills and find out which resources to search to make finding the evidence easier and quicker. Includes demonstrations and hands-on use of PubMed, NHS databases, NHS Evidence Specialist Collections and Google.

Build on your existing searching skills and develop your skills to use more advanced searching strategies and techniques and access additional evidence-based resources. Includes demonstrations and hands-on use of NHS databases (advanced), The Cochrane Library and more.
Introduction to Critical Appraisal
