'Open science' case studies wanted

In a nutshell: The Research Information Network (RIN) and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) are looking to fund a series of case studies which will examine what motivates researchers to work (or want to work) in an open manner with regard to their data, results and protocols, and whether advantages are delivered by working in this way. The case studies will also examine the disincentives and barriers to such ‘open science’ methods. The RIN and NESTA are making available up to £15,000 for this project, which is intended to run from October 2009 until January 2010.

In a nutshell: The National Institute of Health Research, Research Design Service for the North West provides free advice on research design to researchers in the North West who are developing proposals for national, peer-reviewed funding competitions for applied health or social care research.
The National Institute of Health Research, Research Design Service for the North West has been successful with its recent application to tender for a new contract with the NIHR to deliver the North West Research Design Service from April 2010 for five years.

GCP: Good Clinical Practice - 'Design, conduct, performance, monitoring,auditing, recording, analysis and reporting of clinical trials and toensure the rights, integrity and confidentiality of trial subjects are protected'
ICH: International Conference on Harmonisation (of technical requirementsfor registrationof pharmaceutical products for human use)

PRINCE2 Practitioner Courses provided by INFOcus for only £250

In a nutshell: As part of the INFOcus Learning Portal initiative provided by the NHS North West funded INFOcus Service, PRINCE2 Practitioner courses will be running from September 2009.
These conversion courses are designed for people who have already passed PRINCE2 Foundation and wish to convert to the PRINCE2 Practitioner qualification. It is a 3 day classroom based course for up to 16 students and will be facilitated by Remarc and held at their offices in Central Manchester.
INFOcus will be subsidising places on these courses and can offer the course for the superb price of £250 per person. This price not only includes your place on the 3 day course but also your fee for the Practitioner exam and also a copy of the PRINCE2 Manual (RRP £80) .
The course dates currently scheduled are:
28th- 30th September 2009
12th-14th October 2009
2nd- 4th November 2009

In a nutshell: The WUTH Integrated Library Service has launched a new range of current awareness and horizon scanning bulletins with the aim of keeping you up to date in your area of interest.
What are LEAF bulletins?
LEAF (Latest Electronic information At your Fingertips) bulletins aim to enhance your decision-making by keeping you up to date with the latest developments as well as anticipated events in your particular healthcare interest area. LEAF Bulletins are delivered to you by e-mail and will alert you to new innovations, improvements, best practice, news and evidence in your area of interest.
What bulletins are available?
The bulletins we currently offer include horizon scanning bulletins for Breast Feeding, Cancer, Horizon Scanning bulletin, Cardiovascular Horizon Scanning bulletin, Community Diagnostics, COPD, Dental, Diabetes Type 2, Emotional Health and Wellbeing, End of Life care, Immunisation, Infection Control, Patient Experience, Sexual Health, Stroke, Sustainability, Urgent Care. In a nutshell: University of Chester resources are being moved from the McArdle Library (Education Centre, Arrowe Park Hospital) to the new University of Chester Library at Clatterbridge.
The McArdle Library will be offering a modified service during the following periods:
Friday 17th, 9.00am-12.00pm
Monday 20th July
Tuesday 21st July
On these dates you can...
-Have full access to the IT Suite – just follow the signs to the side entrance*
-Access the internet*
-Access the Library catalogue*
-Access PCIS*
-Access the specialist software*
-Use the IT Suite to study*
-Ask us to fetch books and journals for you to use
-Ask us to fetch books for you to loan
-Renew and return your books
-Pay your fines
-Ask us to do your photocopying
-Print as usual*
-Use our Inter-library loan service
-Access our usual enquiry service
-Access our specialist services
-Buy stationery
-Use the Bleep phone located outside seminar room 7
*These services will not be available on Friday 17th July 9am-12pm
However on these dates you may not...
-Access the McArdle Library through the main doors which will be closed, however you can gain access to the IT Suite and to a wide range of Library services
-Have 24 hour access to the McArdle Library
From Wednesday 22nd July all users of the McArdle and John A. Aitken Libraries will need a Library Card to be a member of the library. A £5 refundable deposit will be required for your Library Card.
