The Integrated Library Service (ILS) is working towards the development of a fiction lending library for staff. A number of non fiction books have already been bought. However, we would like to grow this collection further with your help.
If you have any fiction books (all genres welcome!) in good condition you wish to donation to the ILS simply post them in the book return boxes in the foyer or in the McArdle Library at Arrowe Park Hospital, or hand them into the library staff at either the McArdle Library, Arrowe Park Hospital or John A.Aitken Library, Clatterbridge Hospital. Please note duplicates will be passed onto the League of Friend library trolley that goes round the wards to ensure best use is made of donated items.
We would also like to invite you write a review of a book that you have found to be a particularly good read - this could be a book related to your daily practice in your workplace or even a novel you read on your last holiday! Integrated Library Service awarded business intelligence role tender
Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (WUTH) Integrated Library Service (ILS) have been awarded a tender by the National Institute of Innovation and Improvement (NIII) to "Develop a Business Intelligence Role For NHS Libraries" over the next 3 years.
Lisa Anderson (formerly Clinical Librarian) will be seconded to the role of Business Intelligence Service Project Manager. Lisa will be supported in this role by Victoria Kirk, who has been seconded for a period of three years to the Clinical Librarian role within the Trust.
As part of the NIII Service Modernisation Programme the tender aims to support the development of library services to meet local business needs. The vision of the ILS team is to establish a comprehensive Business Intelligence Service (BIS) that provides a knowledge harvesting and horizon scanning service to inform the work identified by the Trust’s Business Intelligence Unit.
A dedicated BIS (which will be part of HR and Organisational Development) will identify data to facilitate and enable the development of future practice and service delivery for the Trust. This pioneering service will be a fundamental device of the Trust’s service improvement, business/practice development and marketing. The learning gained from the project will be cascaded using uptake and spread methodology.

National Knowledge Week: Skin Cancer
The National Library for Health (NLH) Cancer Specialist Library and Skin Disorders Specialist Library are holding their first National Knowledge Week on Skin Cancer from Monday 5 May until Friday 9 May 2008. This event is being arranged to correspond with Sun Awareness Week and Euro Melanoma Day, which is on 5 May this year.
The National Knowledge Week is particularly aimed at NHS health professionals, and will highlight sources of information and guidance on skin cancers and their treatment.
Included as part of the Knowledge Week will be the Libraries’ first Annual Evidence Updates on Melanoma and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer, which brings together the results of a comprehensive search for systematic reviews published over the last three years.
There will also be commentaries from invited experts discussing new evidence and recent developments in a wide range of skin cancer topics.

National Library for Health announces changes to health news analysis service
On the 31st March 2008 the National Library for Health’s ‘Hitting the Headlines’ health news service, which was provided by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination came to an end.
The good news is that the National Library for Health will continue to provide users with access to high quality news analysis via the ‘Behind the Headlines’ service provided by NHS Choices. This service is now available on the NLH homepage at www.library.nhs.uk. In addition to this, the searchable ‘Hitting the Headlines’ archive will be retained.
‘Behind the Headlines’ provides an unbiased and evidence-based analysis of health stories that make the news on a daily basis and will work to the standards developed by the ‘Hitting the Headlines’ to enhance their service even further.

The Integrated Library Service welcomes new Library Assistants
Faye Keane and Beccy Fulcher join the Integrated Library Service Team in March 2008.
Hi I’m Beccy Fulcher and I’m the new library assistant based mainly at Clatterbridge Hospital. I studied Psychology and Criminology at Keele University and graduated in 2005.
Since then I have worked as a support worker at Liverpool John Moore’s University and as a volunteer for victim support, specialising in domestic violence. I think I will enjoy working in a health library as I studied health psychology at university and I am looking forward to getting to know the people here as I have only lived on the Wirral for 2 years.

IMPORTANT NEWS: Changes to Dialog Databases on 1st April 2008 means you may lose saved searches
If you are the holder Athens username and password you are probably already familiar with the range of electronic information resources your password entitles you to. The purpose of this news item is to let you know about some changes to how you'll be able to access and use those resources in the future.
What is happening to the Dialog Databases?
Last year the nationally provided NHS electronic resources were re-procured. Dialog, which since 2004 has held the national contract to supply the NHS with electronic databases, lost their contract. As a result from 31st May 2008 you will no longer be able to search databases via Dialog.
How will I search healthcare databases after May 2008?
A new NHS-branded search tool is being developed by the National Library for Health (NLH). The new search engine, called Search 2.0, is currently being tested by NHS librarians. It will be the main discovery tool to locate citations from the following primary databases:

Important note
The current Dialog Datastar search interface will continue to be available, in parallel with Search 2.0, until May 31st. Unfortunately, any literature searches you have saved on Dialog Datastar WILL NOT be carried over to Search 2.0 once Dialog is switched off. Please save your searches to your own computer before then.

As part of the national re-procurement of NHS electronic resources Proquest also lost its contract to be the main supplier of NHS electronic journals. From the 31st March 2008 Proquest titles will no longer be available to NHS users.
Which electronic journals will replace the Proquest titles?
The Proquest titles are being replaced by fewer but what the National Library for Health hope will be higher quality titles as detailed below:
Links will also appear to articles in these collections from citations in your search results from Search 2.0 and titles will appear on the NHS A-Z list of journals.
What’s happening to the NHS A-Z list of journals?
MyJournals, the A-Z list of NHS journals, will remain as the one-stop-shop for locating NHS electronic journal content. Printing and Inter-Library Loan Charges for Junior Doctors
As a result of a decision made at the January meeting of the Medical Education Task Force it has been agreed that from Tuesday 1st April 2008 all printing and Inter-Library Loan (ILL) requests made by junior doctors will be charged at the advertised rate.
The list of charges for these services are displayed in both the McArdle Library, Education Centre, Arrowe Park and the John A. Aitken Library, Wirral Postgraduate Medical Centre, Clatterbridge, as well as the library website.
If you wish to re-charge your division for any charges that you incur, you must fill in a Divisional Charge Form. Forms are available from the library desk or via our website. Please remember that this re-charge facility must be authorised by a member of staff who has been identified as being on the Trust’s Scheme of Delegation for that particular budget. Re-charges are sent electronically to finance with notification to the divisions every three months.
