The Integrated Library Service welcomes new Library Assistants

Faye Keane and Beccy Fulcher join the Integrated Library Service Team in March 2008.


Hi I’m Beccy Fulcher and I’m the new library assistant based mainly at Clatterbridge Hospital. I studied Psychology and Criminology at Keele University and graduated in 2005.

Since then I have worked as a support worker at Liverpool John Moore’s University and as a volunteer for victim support, specialising in domestic violence. I think I will enjoy working in a health library as I studied health psychology at university and I am looking forward to getting to know the people here as I have only lived on the Wirral for 2 years.


Hi! I’m Faye Keane and I’ve just started working as a library assistant at the McArdle Library, Arrowe Park. I have just completed a journalism degree at The University of Sheffield. I really enjoyed my degree as it gave me a brilliant opportunity to develop my communication skills.
I have also worked temporarily as a library assistant for Wirral Libraries and have enjoyed dealing with the public and developing my ability to provide confident customer service. I am excited about working in a health library and am looking forward to meeting new people and learning about my new workplace.

IMPORTANT NEWS: Changes to Dialog Databases on 1st April 2008 means you may lose saved searches

If you are the holder Athens username and password you are probably already familiar with the range of electronic information resources your password entitles you to. The purpose of this news item is to let you know about some changes to how you'll be able to access and use those resources in the future.

What is happening to the Dialog Databases?
Last year the nationally provided NHS electronic resources were re-procured. Dialog, which since 2004 has held the national contract to supply the NHS with electronic databases, lost their contract. As a result from 31st May 2008 you will no longer be able to search databases via Dialog.

How will I search healthcare databases after May 2008?
A new NHS-branded search tool is being developed by the National Library for Health (NLH). The new search engine, called Search 2.0, is currently being tested by NHS librarians. It will be the main discovery tool to locate citations from the following primary databases:

• PubMed/Medline
• Cinahl
• Embase
• Alternative and Complementary Medicine Database
• British Nursing Index
• PsycINFO
• Health Management Information Consortium (HMIC)

The planned national launch date is April 1st 2008, so that there will be a two month overlap between the Dialog databases and Search 2.0 during this transitional period.

Important note
The current Dialog Datastar search interface will continue to be available, in parallel with Search 2.0, until May 31st. Unfortunately, any literature searches you have saved on Dialog Datastar WILL NOT be carried over to Search 2.0 once Dialog is switched off. Please save your searches to your own computer before then.

Changes to NHS electronic full-text journals
As part of the national re-procurement of NHS electronic resources Proquest also lost its contract to be the main supplier of NHS electronic journals. From the 31st March 2008 Proquest titles will no longer be available to NHS users.

Which electronic journals will replace the Proquest titles?
The Proquest titles are being replaced by fewer but what the National Library for Health hope will be higher quality titles as detailed below:

• 10 JAMA and Archive Journals titles
• 590 healthcare titles via Cinahl Full Text (Provided by EbscoHOST Database)

You can access these titles now with your NHS Athens account.
Links will also appear to articles in these collections from citations in your search results from Search 2.0 and titles will appear on the NHS A-Z list of journals.

What’s happening to the NHS A-Z list of journals?
MyJournals, the A-Z list of NHS journals, will remain as the one-stop-shop for locating NHS electronic journal content. From the 1st April the site should reflect all these changes to journal content. Please link to http://journals.library.nhs.uk and login with your NHS Athens password to view titles available.

E-journals available for trial period

All NHS staff and students in the North West now have online access to ten more journals on a trial for March 2008 only. Access is via your NHS Athens account.

Printing and Inter-Library Loan Charges for Junior Doctors

As a result of a decision made at the January meeting of the Medical Education Task Force it has been agreed that from Tuesday 1st April 2008 all printing and Inter-Library Loan (ILL) requests made by junior doctors will be charged at the advertised rate.

The list of charges for these services are displayed in both the McArdle Library, Education Centre, Arrowe Park and the John A. Aitken Library, Wirral Postgraduate Medical Centre, Clatterbridge, as well as the library website.

If you wish to re-charge your division for any charges that you incur, you must fill in a Divisional Charge Form. Forms are available from the library desk or via our website. Please remember that this re-charge facility must be authorised by a member of staff who has been identified as being on the Trust’s Scheme of Delegation for that particular budget. Re-charges are sent electronically to finance with notification to the divisions every three months.

Specialist software available in the library

Did you know that the Integrated Library Service provides access to a range of specialist software and information systems to support you in your clinical practice and research?

• BoardMaker: A computer software program used to make communication boards, picture schedules, instruction sheets and more. Available at: McArdle Library.
• NVIVO: Qualitative analysis software designed to aid users in managing, organising and supporting research in qualitative data analysis projects. Available at: McArdle Library.
• PCIS: Patient Care Information System, access from the Library Services the Trust’s Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system. Available at: McArdle Library & John A. Aitken Library.
• Reference Manager: Software for managing bibliographies. Available at: McArdle Library.

Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS)

The Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) service is an NHS funded resource that provides access to reliable clinical knowledge about many common conditions (formerly PRODIGY).

CKS provides concise summaries on how to manage almost 500 clinical situations (scenarios) commonly encountered in primary and first contact care. These Clinical Summaries are underpinned by detailed up-to-date clinical knowledge on common acute and chronic diseases, and disease prevention.

CKS can be accessed through the National Library for Health website at http://www.library.nhs.uk/. The conditions covered are indexed alphabetically and by clinical specialty.

Also available through CKS is the Dynamed clinical reference tool summaries for nearly 2000 topics. Dynamed is updated daily and monitors the content of over 500 medical journals and systematic evidence review databases. Each publication is reviewed and articles are evaluated for clinical relevance and scientific validity. The new evidence is then integrated with existing content.

McArdle Library photocopy card dispenser

Please note that the photocopy card dispenser is now in operation in the McArdle Library, Arrowe Park. You can buy £1.00 photocopy cards only, which will provide 20 photocopies using the McArdle Library photocopier. This now means that you obtain photocopy card credits 24 hours a day.

Shared Library Service officially open!

Thursday 6th September 2007 saw the latest development in the delivery of library services within the Trust. This day marked the official opening of the shared library service between Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Chester, Faculty of Health and Social Care.

All members of staff have worked hard over the past eighteen months to ensure this process was a success. The official opening of the shared library service provided an opportunity for staff and guests from both organisations to celebrate these efforts.

The opening ceremony was conducted by Dr. David Galvani, Director of Learning and Development from Wirral University Teaching Hospital and Dr.Chris Haslam, Provost of the
Warrington Campus and Dean of Corporate Planning and Development from the University of Chester. After speeches a "virtual ribbon" was cut to mark the actual opening.

A beautifully iced (real!) cake decorated with the logos of both organisations was cut to celebrate the occasion. Big thanks to Ian McKay, a member of the library staff at the main university campus at Chester, for making the cake. Guests were invited to the dining room for a buffet lunch and an opportunity to socialise with each other as well as tour the library. Many thanks to everyone who contributed towards the opening ceremony!
