People with learning disabilities have a higher level of health needs than the general population, many of which are unmet. The Learning Disability Health Needs Annual Evidence Update provides bibliographies of published research for some key health issues:
* Cancer
* Coronary heart disease
* Epilepsy
* Challenging behaviour
* Respiratory illness
We know that many people with learning disabilities do not to seek out support from the healthcare system unaided, and that healthcare issues can remain undiagnosed or untreated. Healthcare professionals in primary care have infrequent contact with people with learning disabilities, and few have had specific training, although the requirement to offer Health Action Planning to people with learning disabilities to help identify healthcare needs should improve outcomes.

Annual Evidence Update on Osteoporosis and Fragility Fractures: 30th June - 4th July 2008
An update of the evidence on this topic from the NLH Musculoskeletal and Trauma & Orthopaedics Specialist Libraries.
The Osteoporosis and Fragility Fractures Annual Evidence Update will provide a collection of Guest Editorials, by leading experts, on important topics in this area. In addition, an Annual Evidence Update has been prepared which represents the outcome of a detailed search of the literature published in the last 12 months up to the end of May 2008. The search has been for predominantly high-quality evidence in the form of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. We will also provide links to any new guidelines, technology reviews or information about forthcoming material relevant to this topic.

Dialog Datastar extension
The National Library for Health (NLH) has extended the Dialog Datastar contract for a further month.
Access to the NLH health related databases via Dialog Datastar will come to an end on 31st July 2008. All saved searches and alerts must be saved so that they can be used in the new NLH interface which will be the only route to the bibliographic databases after 31st July 2008.
This is the FINAL extension of the Dialog Datastar service and it is important that you transfer their searches during the month of July to avoid losing this data.

Multiple Sclerosis Annual Evidence Update (Neurological Conditions)

The National Library for Health (NLH) Neurological Conditions Specialist Library project team has carried out a systematic search on Multiple Sclerosis to identify all high level evidence published in the past year, namely guidelines, systematic reviews,health technology assessments and economic evaluations. Leading experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance to the busy clinician. A list of the most useful papers, along with commentary from the experts, will be available on the site from 23rd June.

New! Training session for new NLH health related databases interface
You may already be aware that the health related databases (accessible via the National Library for Health, NLH) will no longer be supplied by Dialog.
From 1st July 2008 the databases will be searched via a new NLH interface.
The Integrated Library Service (ILS) is running a training session titled ‘Electronic Resources 2: Searching health related databases’, which will enable you to use the new interface.
These sessions will be held in the McArdle Library training room within the Education Centre at Arrowe Park Hospital.

New ILS training session launched! Introduction to Map of Medicine
What is the Map of Medicine?
The Map of Medicine (MoM) is a web-based visual representation of evidence-based patient care journeys covering 28 medical specialties and 390 pathways. Wirral Local Health Community is an early adopter of the Map.
How can I get training on using the Map of Medicine?
The Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) NHS Foundation Trust Integrated Library Service (ILS) is delivering a series of training sessions titled ‘Introduction to the Map of Medicine’.
The session will be delivered in two parts. The first part of the session will be a presentation and demonstration of the Map of Medicine. After attending this session, participants will be invited to take part in a ‘drop in’ tutorial session at a later date.
On completion of this session, participants will be aware and have an understanding of how to:
· Access the MoM via the Internet
· Obtain and use a username and password for future access to the MoM
· Navigate the layout and structure of the MoM website
· Search, browse and use filters to view over 400 patient journeys visualised in pathways
· Basically interpret and view MoM features around each pathway including the evidence-based accreditation process
· Add personal notes to patient pathways
· Search and link to other online resources via MoM including the National Library for Health (NLH) British National Formulary (BNF) and Google
· Print out patient pathways
· View pathways from other trusts
· Use additional features to give feedback, obtain online help, and via news and updates about MoM

16th-20th June 2008 Age Related Macular Degeneration Annual Evidence Update (Eyes and Vision Specialist Library)

The NLH Eyes and Vision Specialist Library presents a collection of evidence on Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) that has emerged in the past 12 months. The term Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is used to cover both wet and dry forms of the disease AMD. The dry form of the condition is also known as geographic atrophy and the wet form of the condition is also known as neovascular AMD. The emphasis of this Annual Evidence Update is on the sight threatening or visually impairing forms of AMD. Searches were limited to the period February 2007 to May 2008 and the findings are presented through a number of topics reflecting the care pathway. The evidence has been categorised into secondary publications, interventional studies and observational studies. Links to the full text articles are provided where available and links to PubMed abstracts in all other cases.

This briefing paper reports on a series of seminars held at the Nuffield Trust in February and March 2008. The paper identifies the lessons to emerge from the examples presentations at the seminars, and the implications for the NHS in the context of the Darzi review.
